Zunzi’s
Savannah Historic District
Zunzi’s is located in Savannah’s Historic District, inside a quaint brick building with yellow awnings and flags flapping outside. This popular hole-in-the-wall has gained the distinction of being one of the best sandwich shops in America. Folks will wait in line for hours at this small counter-serve for a sandwich to go.
Owner’s Johnny and Gabriella’s different cultures’ inspire the mix of international foods served daily. An eclectic and delicious menu takes center stage as the flavors from exotic and far-away lands combine to create the dishes that have made Zunzi’s so popular. First, start with a bite of hummus, and then savor a homey cottage pie, a char-broiled hickory-smoked pork chop, or a rustic curry stew. Other popular entrées include the Grilled Salmon, topped with their Signature spices, Baked Chicken Breast, baked in tin foil with olive oil and spices, Homemade Lasagna, topped with Gabriella’s marinara sauce, and finally Oliver’s Lunch, a combination of chicken and your choice of smoked and/or homemade South African sausage. There are also great vegetarian selections like falafel or grilled vegetables over rice.
El Conquistador
But it’s the sandwiches that have put this Savannah eatery on top. In particular the El Conquistador, by far their most popular sandwich, a baked chicken breast served on French bread, topped with lettuce and tomatoes and Zunzi’s special sauce. The tangy and hearty sandwich received national attention when the Travel Channel’s Adam Richman named it one of the top three sandwiches in America.
The folks behind the counter are friendly and and very accommodating. They answer customers’ questions about the items on the menu. They even give you free samples..
This is a tiny place, with barely room for four people at a time. They do have a few tables with umbrellas in the parking lot next door. But most people just carry out.
They are open Monday through Saturday, 11am-6pm.
