Overview
Georgia State Railroad Museum
Savannah Historic District
The Georgia State Railroad Museum, formerly named the Roundhouse Railroad Museum, is located in Tricentennial Park. It is the oldest and largest existing nineteenth-century railroad complex in the country. Additionally, it is a National Historic Landmark and part of a historic district included in the National Register of Historic Places. Thirteen of its original buildings are still standing and five of them contain
original exhibits, including the roundhouse, with its operating turntable and a 126-foot brick smokestack with privies around its base.
Visitors can walk along the premises where actual Rolling Stock is on display. They can also learn about each structure and participate in activities. These activities include a ride on a historic steam or diesel locomotive, check out historic railcars and see the handcar. There are also activities for the kids in the baggage car.
Across the street from the museum is the former Central of Georgia passenger station which is now the Savannah Visitors Center and the Savannah History Museum. Built in 1860, it is one of the oldest railroad stations in Georgia. The original train shed at the rear of the building and inside are also exhibits on the history of Savannah. Additionally, under the train shed is a Baldwin steam locomotive that was built in 1890.
There is no shortage of things to see and do at the Museum. The attractions include a huge roundhouse with an operating turntable, numerous historic railroad buildings and machinery, along with stationary steam and diesel engines, and office cars and cabooses.
The Georgia State Railroad Museum is on the list of National Historic Landmarks in Georgia (U.S. state) and on the National Register of Historic Places listings in Chatham County, Georgia.
